Fred always thought triangles were fascinating, complex and beautiful when she was in school.

As she lies in bed, she considers what she knows about them. They’re comprised of three lines connecting three vertices. There are different classifications – according to the relative length of their sides as equilateral, isosceles and scalene and according to the size of their largest internal angle as right, obtuse, and acute. Triangles can be used geometry and trigonometry, and there are literally hundreds of different constructions that can be used to locate specific points inside them. Triangles can also be used as the solid foundation for pyramids, used to build up something that can last for years.

But in movies and television shows, Fred knows, triangles always seem to be seen as bad things. So many plots are about two boys going after the same girl or two girls fighting over the same boy. And in the process, friendships get ruined and someone gets left out in the end.

Those aren’t truly triangles, though, she thinks. Triangles are connected on all sides, through each vertex. If each person in those movie triangles is represented by a vertex, then they’re incomplete, lacking connection on one side. They’re Vs if the people were friends or two straight lines connected together if the two don’t really even know the each other.

A true triangle would be what she has here, lying in between Wesley and Rupert, with the connection she has to both of them and the connection they have to each other. There has been no fighting between two for one, no friendships getting ruined, no one getting left out. Well, not usually – only when one of them has a long work day or has to go away on Council business. But when that happens, they all trust and love each other enough to know their place in their bed will be there when they return.

She likes watching them together – when they kiss, when they have sex. She knows both of them like watching the other kiss and have sex with her. And when all three of them make love together, it takes her breath away.

So when Wesley snuggles up to her and wraps his arm around her to rest his hand on Rupert, and Rupert responds by pressing against her back and resting his hand over Wesley’s arm, she knows that their triangle is as fascinating, complex and beautiful as the ones she studied in school and nothing like the ones on television or in the movies.
